Many footpaths lead from 400 metres above sea level in the ruggedly picturesque Ilz valley to the Rachel (1453 m), Lusen (1373 m) and Dreisessel (1332 m) mountains along the border. With 6 landscape conservation areas, 10 nature reserves, 61 protected natural features as well as the first German National Park, the county is full of natural riches. In the high area between the Rachel and Lusen mountains, nature is left to its own devices without any human interference – the cultivated forest has reverted to the natural forest it once was. Besides geologically unusual rocky outcrops, there are numerous gullies gouged out over centuries by mountain streams.
In the Buchberger Leite, for example, the path from Freyung to the Carbidwerk, which has been producing artificial gems for a hundred years, has on the one side sharply rising rocks and on the other tumbling water. At Mauth, well known as a winter sport resort because of the high reliability of snow there, there is a refuge for otters, where they are safe from the threat of extinction. The Open Air Museum at Finsterau has an impressive display of old buildings depicting the history of the area and its people.
